Key Takeaways for Personal Branding

The House of Beckham, by acclaimed British biographer Tom Bower, shares the fascinating story behind Brand Beckham. It’s the multi-billion-dollar empire David and Victoria Beckham have created as one of the world’s most iconic power couples and power players in football, fashion, showbiz and culture.

The perils of personal branding

The House of Beckham is an engrossing tale of how personal branding can go very wrong. Full of controversies, salacious stories and examples of misalignments between their public and private brands, it demonstrates the dark side of personal branding. It highlights how the media and smoke and mirrors were used to manipulate public perceptions to build a personal brand that, by many counts, seems to contradict the couple’s public personas.

While there is,  of course, another side of the story that only the couple knows, the book also shows how having a public personal brand can lead to extraordinary opportunities and also open you up to relentless scrutiny. Because when you put yourself out there in public, you create public interest in your life.

The art of reinvention

The book details the career of both couples in remarkable detail. Victoria, in particular, is described as the Queen of Reinvention. It highlights how the former Spice Girl, a global icon in her own right before meeting and marrying Beckham, pivoted her professional brand into a high-end fashion label. While the reality of her business success is questioned, the tiny steps Victoria took to transition her image is fascinating. From leveraging the right relationships to changes in her appearance, her public transformation from “Posh” Spice to a classy public personal brand is undeniable.

Brand fatigue

The world has witnessed the Brand Beckham in headlights and headlines for decades now. From brand deals to ambassadorships, the duo have together and individually remained a formidable force in culture. However, the book details the strain brand deals, plus the couple’s seemingly relentless pursuit of personal brand fame, often placed on important professional relationships and public perceptions. The story highlights the downfall of when the ‘brand’ becomes bigger than relationships and the genuine pursuit of purpose.

Build a brand first, then an empire.

The book describes how David has spent 20 years building a brand and now wants to spend the next 20 building an empire. Like many celebrities post-their-prime in the career that originally brought them fame  - a harsh reality for athletes in particular -  Beckham is cleverly leveraging the fame and big bucks he earned for it at every opportunity. As a football club owner and with other entrepreneurial pursuits, he has used his personal brand to power the next chapters of his career.
