12 Tiny Power Moves for Your Personal Brand
Build a personal brand that signals confidence, not noise. 12 tiny subtle moves for magnetic, memorable, and market-ready positioning.
My grandmother’s favourite quote came from the Bible (Matthew 23:12): “For those who exalt themselves will be humbled, and those who humble themselves will be exalted.” We had this printed on her memorial card. Being humble was a strongly held value in our household, and so was making the most of yourself. Finding the balance between doing your best, without bragging about it.
When I spent over a decade as a blonde, instead of my natural black, my grandma would tell me to “just blend in”. It took me till nearly my 30s to finally understand what she meant. It wasn’t about being like everyone else. It was about being more of yourself. Confidently bringing out what’s already within with presence and poise.
If you follow my blog, YouTube channel or podcast, you know I’m not a big fan of the cliched ‘strong voice’ or ‘visibility’ advice in personal branding. It misses the nuance.
Personal branding doesn’t always call for bold declarations or dramatic reinventions. Sometimes, it’s the small, stealthy moves - ones you make behind the scenes - that shift your entire presence. The quiet tweaks. The strategic silences. The things you don’t post. The moves that make you memorable, not just visible.
I’m sharing 12 tiny power moves that elevate your personal brand - not through performance, but through purpose and precision. Rooted in clarity, credibility, and your elusive je ne sais quoi. Each one is designed to help you build a personal brand that doesn’t shout, but signals.
1. Build in silence
As the saying goes:
“When you build in silence, they don't know what to attack.”
Add to your skill set in secret. Work for weeks, months or years on what gives you your edge.
2. Don’t announce moves, embody your arrival
There are no rules that require you to share your new job, promotion or pursuit of your latest credentials.
Set the stage for an unexpected reveal. Skip shouting your new moves; instead, compel curiosity.
Let your levelling up be felt, not flaunted.
3. Strategise like a chess Grandmaster
Think many moves ahead. Outmanoeuvre the marketplace competition in your mind first to stay ahead.
4. Leave breadcrumbs, not trails
Build anticipation. Leave clues. Create intrigue. Keep them captivated. Strategise for a stealth pre-promotion campaign. Give “coming soon,” instead of “breaking news” energy.
5. Don’t follow trends, set the tone
Be the tastemaker, not the chaser. Create, don’t copy. Let others steal your style while you’re busy in the background working on your next moves.
6. Go away. Glow up. Glide back in
Press pause on your public personal brand. Exit gracefully. Glow up in private. Come back as the better version of you.
7. Keep parts of your process private
Document the journey, invite others along with you, yet still keep parts of what gives your personal brand an edge in the marketplace private. Save it for your inside circle, not the lurkers.
8. Have a certain je ne sais quoi
Embody a quality that can’t be described or easily named. Have a certain something others can’t quite put their finger on, while you know exactly what your special something is.
9. Don’t over-explain yourself
Instead of pitching for appreciation, think Price on Application, high-value energy.
10. Let others do the talking for you
Your posts and marketing tell the world you're a star. Social proof shows them. Let others share the storytelling for you. Spoke on stage? Let others share your spotlight for you.
11. Don’t broadcast your rebrand
Quietly glow up your brand: Shift your service, evolve your visuals, lift your language. Experiment and keep evolving. Trust the right people to notice and feel your momentum.
12. Speak last
Skip the ‘strong voice’ cliche. Listen aggressively. Speak last with emotional resonance - an impact that echoes.
These subtle shifts aren’t all about optics - they’re about ownership. Quietly refining your positioning, curating your presence, and building depth behind the scenes creates a brand that is confident and secure with or without the post. One that keeps levelling up in ways others can’t quite pinpoint. One that moves ahead of the marketplace. Next time you're tempted to announce your next move, pause. Consider if there’s a better way to embody your elevation. The most magnetic brands don’t scream for attention. They attract quiet command and undeniable energy.
