A Portfolio Career: Beyond the Traditional Career Ladder

Work is no longer linear. Portfolio careers are reshaping how we build income, identity, and fulfilment through multiple roles, skills and evolving opportunities.

For a long time, career conversations revolved around climbing the career ladder. But work has changed. The acceleration of AI has heightened risks, while at the same time opportunities are more exciting than ever. Careers are becoming less linear and more dynamic.

In my earlier blog, Your Personal Brand is Your Career Security, I touched on the idea of a portfolio career. But it’s worth a deeper discussion on why portfolio careers are increasingly relevant and how they enhance your professional identity and fulfilment. Because you may not always need to quit your job, pivot your career path or reinvent your career entirely. Sometimes you just need more forms of work.

1. What is a Portfolio Career?

A portfolio career is an increasingly popular way of working where your professional life is made up of multiple roles, projects, income streams or other contributions rather than a single job with a single employee.

You’re not defined by one title or organisation, but rather you might have a:

  • Core role (e.g. executive, manager, consultant or specialist)

  • Freelance/contractor role (e.g. writer or web developer)

  • Consulting role

  • Coaching role

  • Speaker role

  • Content creator role

  • Business venture

  • Investments

  • Board or advisory contributions

You’re not climbing a singular, one-directional career ladder in the traditional sense; you’re building a portfolio that evolves, expands and adapts over time.

A portfolio career reflects a change in how work itself functions. Careers are becoming less linear and more fluid and are being rapidly shaped by technology, remote work and contracting.  Compounded with the rise of personal branding, there is a growing expectation that professionals will contribute value to industries in multiple ways across different contexts.

2. The Investor’s Mindset

Investing 101 most often tells us to diversify our risk, and yet, when it comes to careers and income, so many people have traditionally taken the all-eggs-in-one-basket approach. But career security is no longer enhanced by staying with one organisation as long as possible, giving it 100% of your time. It comes from:

  • Transferable skills that work across different contexts

  • Building a strong personal brand and a professional reputation beyond your title

  • Cultivating diverse networks and opportunities

  • Not being dependent on a single source of income or identity

For most of my career, I have had more than one source of income. It happened naturally without it being an intentional income or risk management strategy. However, in today’s economic environment and with AI advancing at breakneck speed, it’s the risk management strategy that no one should ignore. But beyond risk, it may be how you most thrive.

It’s often quoted that the wealthiest people in the world have at least seven sources of income. For many, they may have built their wealth in one area first, before moving their time, investments and expertise to other areas. For example:

  • A business owner who becomes a podcast host

  • The executive who becomes a consultant

  • The content creator who becomes a paid speaker

A Portfolio Career: Beyond the Traditional Career Ladder

3. You are the Niche

One of the more interesting examples of this shift can be seen in the creator economy. Content creators understand personal branding better than most, and a typical successful content creator is likely generating income from:

  • In-content ads (e.g. ads within their YouTube videos or podcast)

  • Brand deals/partnerships (e.g. brands promoted in their content or through events)

  • Products (e.g. merchandise, tangible products for their community)

  • Services (e.g. memberships/subscriptions, consulting, coaching, programs)

  • Establishing standalone brands

  • Investments

  • Publishing or media deals (e.g. Spotify or book deals)

  • Affiliation program

Much of the appeal of content creators, for example, comes from making money simply by being who they are, leveraging their creative capabilities or expertise, and having ownership over their work and lifestyle.

Psychologically, it also reflects a deeper shift - or, you might argue - an enduring reality in what people want from work. Many professionals are no longer satisfied with a single identity defined by a job title. They want work that reflects multiple dimensions of who they are, e.g. creative, strategic, relational and entrepreneurial.

In psychology, Self-Determination Theory says people thrive when they have autonomy, competence and relatedness.

A portfolio career supports all three:

  • Autonomy: More control over your work, choices and direction

  • Competence: More variety of work, leading to faster learning and skill growth

  • Relatedness: More diverse people, projects and ways to contribute

Portfolio careers feel fulfilling because they can give you more freedom, growth and connection. Building your personal brand is about more than simply selling yourself for your next job; it’s understanding that you are the niche. Your unique combination of skills and interests makes you the perfect person to solve a particular problem. Don’t limit your professional identity or future earning potential.

Your Portfolio Life

The traditional idea of a single career ladder is no longer the only path to success. Work today is more fluid, interconnected, and shaped by multiple opportunities rather than one fixed role. A portfolio career reflects this shift—where your skills, experiences, relationships, and projects come together to form something far more dynamic and often more fulfilling than a job title.

You are no longer building one job for life - you are building a dynamic career ecosystem that can evolve with you. One that expands as you grow, adapts as industries change, and allows you to express more than a single professional identity.

The portfolio career isn’t just about diversification. It’s about designing a career that is more resilient, more flexible, and more aligned with who you are becoming over time.
