Upgrade Your Self-Concept: Stop Living From an Outdated Version of Yourself

The biggest thing holding you back may not be your skills, experiences, circumstances or confidence, but rather, the identity you keep rehearsing every day.

We often carry around an internal identity shaped by old experiences, old feedback and old stories about who we are: I’m not very confident. I’m not creative. I’m terrible at networking. I’m not a leader. I’m disorganised. I’m not the kind of person who does that. Over time, these beliefs become part of your self-concept. It creates an internal picture of who you are. Without realising it, you can begin making decisions and behaving in ways that reinforce them.

You can’t create a new reality while consistently operating from an old identity.

But there’s another trap, particularly for ambitious people. We can set extraordinary goals for ourselves while continuing to plan, move, strategise and show up from the identity we already have. We want the elevated career, lifestyle or level of success, yet we continue to operate from the self-concept that created our current reality.

Upgrading your self-concept isn't about simply thinking more positively about yourself. It is about shifting your identity. Then, allowing that new identity to shape how you think, act, and show up.

So, rather than waiting to become your Future Self, start acting like them now.

1. Your Future Self Now

Benjamin Hardy, PhD, is a globally renowned Occupational Psychologist and author of Personality Isn’t Permanent, which I discussed in my blog, You Only Need One Goal: How a Keystone Goal Changes Everything. He also wrote Be Your Future Self Now, which I also explored in my blog,Be Your Future Self Now: Hi Me in 10 Years. The Decisions That Shape Your Future.

Hardy argues that your Future Self should drive your present decisions. Most people are attached to their past or even present selves. However, real transformation requires identity-level change - not simply behaviour tweaks. This is what the world’s most iconic performers understand:

“The Future Self concept is simple yet rarely practised. To make quality decisions, know where those decisions will take you. Decisions and actions are best when reverse-engineered from a desired outcome. Start with what you want and work backward. Think and act from your goal, rather than toward your goal.”

For example, your current self-concept might be:

“I'm someone who struggles to put myself out there.”

Future-self concept:

“I'm a confident creator and love sharing my craft.”

Those two identities produce completely different behaviours.

2. The Alter Ego Effect

So how do you just start feeling like your upgraded identity? Enter the Alter Ego. As I discussed in my blog on Todd Herman’s book, Your Alter Ego Advantage: Secret Identities of Elite Performers for Moments that Matter, your alter ego allows you to temporarily upgrade your self-concept.

As research with children has explored, those who associate themselves with a character or identity outperform those who think in the first person. Because when we shift our identity, we shift our behaviours. This isn’t about being fake; it’s about unlocking your potential.

Herman says:

"The process of using an alter ego is not about changing one's fundamental self but rather about revealing the heroic qualities that are already present within.”

To show up and perform as your alter ego, start by:

  • Identifying your ‘Field of Play’: E.g. the boardroom, stage, camera or court.

  • Name your alter ego: Create psychological weight and distance.

  • Identify your ‘Origin Story’: Create emotional resonance.

  • Name the “Enemy”: What are you fighting against?

  • Choose “Totems and Artefacts”: Whatobjects symbolise stepping into your alter ego effect?

  • Pinpoint Your “Activation Events”. The switch that disrupts your default identity.

  • Identify your “Moment of Impact” e.g. Stepping into the boardroom, turning on the camera, stepping on court.

3. Main Character Energy

It’s not enough to simply name your alter ego and where they show up. You have to understand how they show up. Consciously design your alter ego’s character traits to start to embody them.

  • How do they think?

  • How do they speak?

  • How do they dress?

  • How do they move?

  • How do they handle pressure?

My favourite alter ego upgrade practice is building your alter ego into your daily habits and routine.  As I shared in my blog, How Atomic Habits Can Transform Your Identity (Not Just Your Daily Routine), this is what I feel is one of the most underrated insights in the popular book Atomic Habits. Your habits shape your identity through repetition. You rely less on rare, high-impact events and more on the holistic life a high performer builds.

For as long as I can remember, I’ve always been fascinated with learning about other people’s routines, researching them and continuously designing and redesigning my own. However, when you pair conversations around daily habits, routine, productivity and personal growth with the idea of an alter ego, this becomes an even more interesting proposition.

For example, inspired by the people you admire most or your alter ego:

  • What time do they wake up?

  • What is the first thing they do?

  • What does the rest of their morning routine look like?

  • What do they drink?

  • What do they eat?

  • How do they look after their health and physical fitness?

  • How do they stay mentally fit?

  • What does their signature style look like?

  • What does their hair look like?

  • How do they speak?

  • What do they speak about?

  • How do they train or practise their craft?

  • What do they do in their downtime?

  • How do they wind down for the day?

  • What are their creative pursuits?

  • What are they working on?

  • Who do they spend their time personally and professionally with?

  • What are their next goals?

As iconic athletes and performers have proven to us, greatness isn’t created in a moment in time; it’s created through every decision to step closer to the person you know you're capable of becoming.

‘Act As If’, Now

The person you become is shaped by the decisions you make today. So don’t wait for your circumstances to change before you change your identity. Upgrade your self-concept, step into your Future Self, and let your everyday choices become evidence of who you are becoming. Your future isn't waiting for you somewhere ahead. You are rehearsing it every day.
